Why is the school’s logo a castle?

Prospect Hill Academy Charter School’s logo is not in fact a castle but a rendition of the Prospect Hill Monument built in 1903 in Somerville, MA to commemorate the location’s importance during the Revolutionary War.

The school is named after Prospect Hill because it originated in Union Square, at the base of the historic hill, and because it shares the symbolic values referenced by the site: hard work, creative planning, and high aspirations that lead to incredible achievements.

Prospect Hill and its monument now stand as one of the icons for the start of this nation and a place where great ambitions came to fruition.

Prospect Hill was a significant site during the Revolutionary War. It is there that George Washington’s troops raised the first American flag on January 1, 1776.

The flag that was raised is now called the Grand Union flag which shows the British Union Jack bordered by thirteen red and white stripes representing the thirteen colonies. A flag of this kind still flies high atop the Prospect Hill Monument.
